Agricultural Development

praxix haiti

Agriculture development is implemented through the introduction and improvement of various practices such as:

  • Crop selection
  • Seedling preparation and nursery management
  • Soil preparation and conservation: appropriate techniques and tools for tilling earth, and securing soil in a mountainous terrain
  • Planting and watering: simple ways to measure and space grow beds, irrigation methods and frequency, proper maintenance of garden including pruning, the use of natural pesticides and fertilizers
  • Harvesting: proper timing and techniques for a profitable harvest

Classes were held weekly with many students walking several miles to attend classes. Some tools were provided by Praxis, but many students brought their own farming implements. Classes consisted of a combination of instruction and then implementation with students tilling, planting, weeding, watering and maintaining agricultural plots. Graduates receive certificates of completion and considerable recognition with the community.
