Agriculture Seminar

On March 9th, Praxis held a seminar on composting for the farmers of Lavanneau. This event was part of our Agricultural Program and was the first of a series of seminars planned for the year. Many farmers in this rural village are plagued by low yields due to very poor soil conditions.

Composting is an easy way to rehabilitate overused land as it reintroduces vital nutrients and minerals that plants need to grow. Very few farmers in this area know the benefits of compost, nor methods to produce it. This vital class will be taught regularly.

New Markets for Lavanneau Farmers

One of the objectives of our Agricultural Program has been to enhance and improve the crop production of the local farmers. Through either hands-on training courses from an expert agronomist, to field trips to see larger operations and the opportunity to learn better techniques, to focused seminars, our students have been making great strides; we have been thrilled to watch the difference this program is making in their lives.

Another objective of this program is to locate and secure other markets for the farmers of Lavanneau whose only access is the open market. In line with that goal, Praxis is launching a community-based approach to growing tomatoes. After having a two-month market test performed in collaboration with a few large Supermarkets in Port au Prince, our product is being very well received by customers. As a result, Praxis will help local farmers turn their training into personal revenue. We will provide students from our program with seedlings and additional training to promote the success of their gardens. Praxis will use its network of Supermarket and present our farmers’ harvest as a viable alternative to imported produce.

This initiative meets local demand for local product grown by local farmers. The supermarkets remain enthusiastic about our farmers’ produce.

Carissa Caricato of Hoola for Happiness visited with us in March and did an outreach with the kids of Lavanneau.

With a mission to “Spread the joy of hooping and the love of God all over the world, one hoop at a time, one life at a time”,

Ms. Caricato lead over 100 children in fun games and activities. The children learned the value of caring, sharing and joy; the event ended with snacks and drinks for all.

Praxis Represented at a National Symposium

On February 24-25, 2012, Praxis took part in a panel discussion in Port-au-Prince at an event titled "National Symposium for Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Agri-business Opportunities in Haiti."

The event as hosted by University of Florida, and the Faculte d'Agronomie et de Medicine Veterinaire d'Haiti and was attended by over 200 college students from Haiti’s leading agronomy school.

The Panel presented the importance of fostering entrepreneurial skills in young agronomists who typically work for the government or non-profit organizations.

Events like this are important for the economic development of Haiti.

Long Haul 100 Ultra-marathon

An Extreme Event for An Extreme Cause.

Together, we are making a difference in this community, one step at a time. This year's race was a great success and raised over $13,000 with 100% of the proceeds going to programs in Haiti.

The Race

The Long Haul 100 is an extreme race with an extreme cause. Whatever your motivation to run, you can cross the finish line knowing YOU made a difference. With Individual 100mile & 100km UltraMarathons and 5 or 10 runner team relays, this race is the perfect race!

The 2012 LH100 will be held in Wesley Chapel, FL. Course Map is posted here. The course consist of roughly 60% trails and is FLAT!

Improving Circumstances

Fania Floristal is a graduate of Praxis’ first culinary class held in early 2011. She is shy and soft-spoken but is determined to improve her circumstances for the sake of her children. Fania has a 7^th grade education and had never held a job; she earned very little money by selling home commodities like towels and sheets at the open market in Jacmel.

Upon her graduation from the cooking class, she approached the Concepcions and asked if she could work for them as a cook. Soon after her employment, Fania became a single mother to her three girls when her physically abusive husband left town. With less than a week before the first day of school, she was scrambling to find money for tuition and uniforms (books and supplies would have to wait). Praxis made an appeal through its network to create an educational fund to help Fania and her girls. As a result, several children, including Fania’s three girls, are currently enrolled in school on full scholarships.
